History

The University of Virginia launched AdviseVA (formerly the Virginia College Advising Corps) in the fall of 2005 as a public service program to address the widening gap in college access for low-income and first-generation students. Our mission is to expand postsecondary opportunities for students across Virginia, creating a better educated and more skilled Commonwealth.

Pathways Advisers are placed in AdviseVA’s partner high schools across the state and serve a two-year term. Working alongside the school’s staff and faculty, they inform students and their families about various postsecondary opportunities, including higher education, employment, and military enlistment. Advisers support students one-on-one with each step toward their desired path after high school—from exploring careers to assisting with applications.

Since 2005, our advisers have done the following:

  • 336,012 1-on-1 advising sessions with students
  • 98,764 classroom visits and workshops
  • 36,834 meetings with parents and families
  • 13,032 campus tours
  • 13,889 assisted on SAT/ACT preparation
  • 49,788 FAFSAs completed
  • Over $573 million financial aid dollars secured

Currently, 70 advisers serve in 73 partner high schools. AdviseVA is an AmeriCorps program at the University of Virginia.
