What was your path to life after high school graduation like?
My path to life after high school graduation was relatively straightforward—though not without the initial stress of focusing on college recruiting for sports. Once that didn’t work out, I felt lost. I had no clear direction for what I wanted to study or which schools I should apply to. That’s when Ms. Kalea entered at just the right time, helping me think critically about my options and identify the schools where I could best see myself spending the next four years.
How did Ms. Kalea support you with planning for your life after high school?
Ms. Kalea was essential in helping me plan for life after high school. She guided me in understanding what it truly meant to evaluate colleges and universities and how to select which ones to apply to based on my personal wants and needs. Later, when I was nominated to be a Posse Scholar at the University of Virginia, Ms. Kalea played an instrumental role in preparing me for the dynamic and rigorous interview process run by the Posse Foundation. She supported me every step of the way—as both a counselor and mentor I could turn to in times of stress and excitement. She calmed my worries throughout the process and stood by my side until the moment I received the scholarship. I truly owe much of that success to Ms. Kalea and her incredible efforts to ensure I was prepared for each new and daunting step.
What are you up to now? What role did Ms. Kalea play in supporting you along your path to what you are currently doing?
Currently, I am entering my fourth year at the University of Virginia. In the order I joined them, I am a member and former president of the UVA Men’s Club Soccer Team, a student facilitator for the UVA Hoos Connected program, a Fellow in the Meriwether Lewis Institute Class of 2026 cohort, a member of the Fourth-Year Trustees for the Class of 2026, and a new teaching assistant for the Resilient Student course taught by Professor Tim Davis. Ms. Kalea taught me the importance of being intentional with my time and commitments. Just as I had to carefully consider which schools to apply to, I’ve applied that same thoughtfulness in choosing how I spend my time at UVA. I try to make sure I’m involved in things because they truly interest me and align with my values—not just to pad a résumé.
What have you most enjoyed about college so far? Any favorite memories or experiences?
I can say with full confidence that I’ve enjoyed every moment at UVA. Most notably, I spent the spring semester of 2025 studying abroad at UVA’s Valencia campus. This was a dream of mine since arriving at UVA, but as the time approached, I wavered on the decision. Looking back, I would make the same choice a thousand times over. It was not only the best experience of my life so far, but it also taught me valuable lessons about intentionality and taking risks—lessons that have deeply shaped who I am today.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about Ms. Kalea's impact on you?
I can’t thank Ms. Kalea enough for helping me land at UVA. Her support during the application process laid the foundation for the confidence I needed to thrive in a brand-new environment. I feel I’ve made the most of my time here, and I know that with each passing day, Ms. Kalea remains in my corner. It’s always a joy to see her on Grounds, and I look forward to seeing her again in my fourth year.
To Ms. Kalea—thank you for everything. I mean that with the utmost sincerity. Your kindness and compassion shine not only in your work as a counselor but in the way you treat people every day. I am incredibly lucky to have met you.
