About the 20 Stories Series
To celebrate 20 years of impact, we're sharing 20 stories from the people who’ve made our journey possible. From past participants to longtime partners, these voices reflect the heart of our program. Each story highlights the voices, experiences, and milestones that shaped our community. This is one of them.
What do you remember about your first AdviseVA adviser? What was that first year working with them like?
My first adviser was quiet and reserved, yet she had a remarkable ability to make students feel at ease. Always professional, she provided guidance with calm assurance. I’ve loved watching her journey—growing from a supportive adviser to a school counselor, then to assistant director, and now director of AdviseVA. Her dedication and leadership continue to inspire me.
What have been some of your favorite or most memorable experiences working with a AdviseVA adviser?
One of my favorite memories happened just last year, when I attended the Marine Educators Boot Camp with Ms. Sims. The experience was truly life-changing—from the drill sergeants yelling at us to getting a firsthand taste of what the beginning of Marine boot camp is really like. Just getting to Parris Island was a challenge in itself: canceled flights, very little sleep, and then waking up at 4:30 a.m. to catch the bus to the island. It was exhausting, intense, and unforgettable—starting the moment we stepped onto the iconic yellow footprints, just like every Marine recruit before us.We laughed and we cried, but we survived. I am so thankful to have experienced this journey with Ms. Sims.
How has your experience with advisers and AdviseVA generally evolved over the course of your time as a site supervisor?
My time working with AdviseVA and the college advisers has been a great experience. Each adviser has brought something unique to the role. While they all follow a guide to help them navigate the year, they also add their own personal touch, making the experience distinctive and memorable each time.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about your time with AdviseVA?
I am truly thankful for the AdviseVA family. They have been a tremendous blessing to our students, and it's been an honor to serve as the site supervisor for over ten years. Knowing I have someone by my side who can assist with college, career, military, and workforce advising not only lightens my load—it allows me to reach more students. Most importantly, it enables us to work together toward what matters most: the success and growth of our students.
