About the 20 Stories Series
To celebrate 20 years of impact, we're sharing 20 stories from the people who’ve made our journey possible. From past participants to longtime partners, these voices reflect the heart of our program. Each story highlights the voices, experiences, and milestones that shaped our community. This is one of them.
How did your AdviseVA adviser support you with planning for your life after high school? What do you remember about your time with them during your senior year?
Even though I had a pretty good idea of where I'd be going after graduation, my AdviseVA Adviser helped me finalize my plans, answer the confusing questions for financial aid, and apply for scholarships. My AdviseVA Adviser was Sierra Swisher, and she was wonderful at calming my nerves during application season, scholarship season, and graduation. One of my favorite memories with Sierra was when she chaperoned a field trip with OCHS DECA to Orlando, FL. During this trip, I became OC's first international finalist, and Sierra was cheering me on the entire time.
How did you decide to join AdviseVA? Did your experience working with an adviser in high school affect your decision?
I decided to join AdviseVA because I wanted to give back to my community. Community service has always been an important part of my life, and especially when I have the opportunity to give back to Orange County, my hometown. When I found out that I could work at OCHS with my counselors and teachers, I knew that this role was for me. Being a AdviseVA Adviser in my hometown has been so rewarding and wonderful, but most importantly it has allowed to to create meaningful relationships with my students because I know exactly what they're going through and growing through.
What experiences from your time as an adviser so far stand out?
In October 2024, University of Mary Washington came to visit OCHS and offered onsite admissions for our students. One of my students who was accepted, Sarah Wiles, was over the moon excited as UMW was her top choice. I was also very excited because this is someone who I used to babysit and taught to swim. In her second semester, Sarah was one of the counseling center aides. She's always been a hard worker, but she continues to work hard even when her senior year was winding down. Because of her efforts and character, we were able to award her $10,000 through the Cooke Foundation Scholarship. After receiving the scholarship, we hugged and cried together. I am so proud of her.
Another important moment to me is from my first year, Johnathan Leitz and I spent a lot of time working together on college applications, financial aid, and just checking in. Johnathan was in my office at least three times a week the entire school year asking what he could do, if he was on track, and if there's anything I needed help with. At the end of the year, Johnathan chose me for as the educator who "had the most profound effect on [his] life." This is still my proudest award and I treasure it dearly.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about your time with AdviseVA?
My time with AdviseVA has been so meaningful and life-changing. There are many days where the news makes it feel like life is hopeless, but these kids truly give me hope. I know they're going to change the world, and I can't wait to witness them.
